SUMMARY:NCF Courses in Conservation Leadership 2022
DESCRIPTION:NCF is pleased to announce a course on “Exploring the Social and Historical Dimensions of Conservation” as part of the courses in conservation leadership. \n\n\n\nFor comprehensive support and guidance to apply for the course register for a free Career Mapping Session via the link below \n\nhttps://catlearnserv.com/cms \n\n \n\nThe course\, open to conservation practitioners of all persuasions\, will necessarily sacrifice comprehensiveness to focus on helping participants to develop a broad flavor for and a critical appreciation of the complex social and historical dimensions of conservation. Our attempt will be to collectively re-imagine the ideas and practices that can inform current conservation projects in the challenging context of a rapidly accelerating planetary environmental crisis. The course will be held during 26th September to 1st October 2022 in Mysore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\n\n\nConservation today is a broad church. A dizzying\, sometimes contradictory diversity of regulatory\, extractive\, economic and organizational practices fall within the rubric of conservation. In the widest sense\, conservation can be viewed as a diverse set of ideas and practices that mediate relationships between human and non-human nature. These ideas and practices are historically situated and deeply social. This recognition throws up critical questions concerning the structure and dynamics of global conservation. Where and when do conservation ideas and practices stem from? What are the social and political contexts and conjunctures that have influenced and transformed them? How have certain sets of ideas and ideologies come to dominate and assume hegemonic proportions? Is it possible to disentangle the combination of “visible” and “invisible” influences at work in specific practices across the globe? What are the socio-historical processes whose pushes and pulls diverse conservation practices respond to and influence in turn? \nThrough a series of historically informed lecture and reading sessions\, this course will undertake an interactive enquiry into these and allied questions. Focusing on key events\, people\, institutions and movements drawn from the modern history of human – nature relationships\, the sessions will seek to illuminate the role larger global structures and processes have played in the construction of contemporary conservation. Structures and processes that range from European imperialism\, global capitalism and the evolution of institutionalized knowledge systems\, to the formation of sovereign nation-states\, the emergence of global environmental governance & civic awareness and the emergence of pluriversal alternatives. The course sessions will follow the broad structure outlined below: \n\n\nOverview: conceptual foundations and motivations \n\n\nThemes in conservation – protecting\, valuing and ‘balancing’ nature \n\n\nWildlife and the nation state: preservationism and state-led conservation \n\n\nInstitutionalized knowledge: conservation science and the global conservation project \n\n\nReconciling conservation and development: from Stockholm to Rio and beyond \n\n\nNatural capital: conservation in the marketplace \n\n\nBrave new world: from pluriversal alternatives and community-led movements to “neo-protectionism” and de-extinction \n\n\nSynthesis \n\n\n\n\nHOW TO APPLY\n\n\nCLICK HERE to apply \nThe deadline for submission of the applications is 31 August 2022. \nFor any questions you can reach us on apply@ncf-india.org\, with “CL courses 2022” in the subject line. \nNOTE: Selected participants will be notified within a week after the application deadline. \n\n\n \n\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\n\n\nThis course will be held at Mysore during 26th Sep to 1st Oct 2022. The ELM compliments academic learning at the YIF by equipping Fellows with structured problem-solving techniques\, while also training them in designing and implementing sustainable solutions. It helps students learn how to work collaboratively\, solve complex problems with an interdisciplinary approach\, and build domain knowledge. \nCritical Writing\nLearn to think critically and express effectively. \nThe YIF Critical Writing Programme has few visible contextual precedents within the Indian higher education system. Acknowledging the importance of writing as central to processes of knowledge acquisition\, production\, and consumption\, the programme has developed a pedagogy geared towards building critical reading\, writing\, and thinking skills to help Fellows engage with the world of ideas and enable them to develop and express their own ideas in a well-reasoned\, lucid\, and engaging manner. We do this by helping students innovate with genres of writing across different disciplines to develop a metacognitive awareness regarding their own reading and writing practices. These skills act as building blocks for the liberal arts education they receive at Ashoka University and enhance their abilities to navigate academic\, professional\, and social spheres once they graduate from the Fellowship. \nMentorship Programme\nGet mentored by eminent leaders and scholars of the 21st Century. \nMentorship is one of the key pillars of the YIF\, where the Fellows are connected to Mentors with strong personal\, academic\, and professional track records who positively impact and guide their journeys during and beyond the YIF. The fellows have the opportunity to be mentored by not only a stalwart in academia or industry\, but also by an alum who shares a similar background or interest. This allows the Young India Fellows to carve out a meaningful career path over time. \nInspiring Educators\nThe Young India Fellowship attracts the finest academicians\, practitioners\, and experts in the field to the classroom\, and gives them the autonomy to innovate\, create\, and craft curricula. This is a rare freedom within academia and ensures an unparalleled teaching and learning experience\, not just for YIF\, but across all programmes at Ashoka University. \nEach course offering is from a distinct academic or professional domain. Disciplines range from sciences to social sciences and from leadership to the arts. Course offerings include public policy\, art appreciation\, gender and media studies\, leadership\, group dynamics\, business essentials\, Shakespeare\, communication\, and Indian elections.
