Know about international career in policy

Catalyst invites you to talk to the faculty – mentors from the School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), TISS to understand a two-year dual degree academic programme crafted for an international career in policy

Speakers : 

Aseem Prakash is a Professor of Public Policy, School of Public Policy, and Governance,  Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Hyderabad. Aseem has more than 20 years of experience in  research and teaching which also includes a stint at the University of Oxford as a Fell Fund  Fellow. Aseem has been instrumental in laying the intellectual foundation of the School of  Public Policy and Governance including designing the course curriculums of the M.A. in Public  Policy and Governance (PPG) and MA/PGD in Cities and Governance Programmes at TISS. 

Before joining TISS, Aseem was part of the two-member team which established the first  Public Policy school in India- Jindal School of Government and Public Policy. Aseem was also  invited by the UNDP and Department of Planning, Government of Maldives to prepare a  rubric for the first-ever Maldives Institute of Policy Studies in Male, Maldives. 

Aseem has completed over a dozen big research projects for various international and  national donors. His research interests include the interface between the state and markets;  regulation and institutions; sociology of markets, social discrimination, human development.  Currently, Aseem’s research efforts are focused on two research projects: “Regulation of  Small Town Capitalism” and “Cities and Social History” 

Aseem also serves in an advisory capacity in numerous public policy and social science  departments. He is regularly invited as a resource person in various training programmes  conducted for Indian civil servants. 

His most recent books are titled Dalit Capital: State, Markets, and Civil Society in Urban India;  published by Routledge (2015) and The Indian Middle Class (co-authored with Surinder  Jodhka), published by Oxford University Press (2016). 

Aseem is a compulsive follower of political gossip and likes discussing it with people who can  make sense of it. He believes that he would have been more content and happy if he had  pursued a career in sports. Aseem earned his doctorate from the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Dr Ipsita Sapra has been a development practitioner for over a decade before moving into full-time academics in 2010. Ipsita has a PhD in Social Sciences from TISS, Mumbai, and her work involved understanding the livelihoods of young persons with disabilities in rural India. She has been associated with the Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellowship programme. Her research interests include social conflict, gender and development and care in the context of cities.  Ipsita is a recipient of Commonwealth and the British Chevening Scholarships, United Kingdom.Ipsita is the Faculty Coordinator of MA and Post Graduate Diploma programme in Public Policy and Governance at TISS, Hyderabad.

Sauraveswar Sen: Illuminating Paths to Social Development Careers  

Experience: With over 14 years of expertise, Sauraveswar Sen is a beacon in training students and professionals for impactful careers in the social development sector. His multifaceted roles include being the Founder-Mentor of Catalyst, a Visiting Faculty at prestigious institutions like TISS, University of Calcutta, and St. Xavier’s College Mumbai. He’s a Social Entrepreneurship Educator, Strengthens Social Science Teaching, Motivator, Moderator, Judge at Corporate Events and Debates, and a Quizmaster.

Vision: In 2011, Sauraveswar founded Catalyst with a vision to revolutionize social science education in India. His goal was to empower careers in the Humanities-driven development sector, putting them on par with Science and Commerce prospects. His journey took a turn when, at the young age of 23, he transitioned from a Design Engineer to his true passion—teaching and training.

Education Catalyst: Since 2018, Sauraveswar has been empanelled as faculty at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), where he moulds the skills of master’s program students, preparing them for their campus placements. In 2023, Catalyst played a pivotal role in the decennial celebration of the social enterprise development cell at TISS Mumbai.

Mentoring Impact: Sauraveswar’s mentorship extends to institutions like St. Xavier’s College Mumbai, Jadavpur University, Presidency University, and many more. He’s also a mentor for the State Government of Chhattisgarh, nurturing Social Entrepreneurship. He is an active member of SEE – Society of Entrepreneurship Educators and TISS Incube Foundation.

Social Science Teachers across Rourkela, Bengaluru, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Kolkata are being supported by Catalyst to connect their curriculum with Social Sector Careers.
