In this session, Mohimarnab will discuss his career trajectory so far, focusing on his experience at TISS, Mumbai. He will also talk about various alumni from SMCS to indicate the range of possibilities the course offers in terms of career prospects.
Mohimarnab Biswas is a research scholar, currently pursuing an MPhil in Cinema Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His work primarily deals with the politics of popular culture, with special focus on Bombay cinema. Mohimarnab completed his graduation in the discipline of Political Science from Presidency University, Kolkata. Following which, he moved to Mumbai to complete his post-graduation in Media and Cultural Studies from the School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences. His work includes a postgraduate dissertation titled ‘His Name is Khan: Exploring identity and image through Shah Rukh Khan’ which looked to locate Shah Rukh Khan in the continuum of the changing political economy and study how it impinges upon representation, culture, etc. He has also made a couple of documentary films titled ‘Ashiyana’ (based in Navi Mumbai, the film deals with the politics of spatial justice and issues of ‘slum’ eviction) and ‘The Dhammachakra turns’ (on the Hinduisation of Buddhist sites by the Brahmanical state). He qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Mass Communication and Journalism in June, 2019. His work will feature in a book on Historicals in Bollywood which will be published by Routledge India (Taylor and Francis Group) and is expected to be out by 2021.
