In the world of agricultural science and sustainable development, the name M.S. Swaminathan (7th August 1925 – 28 September 2023) shines brightly. A pioneer in the Green Revolution and a staunch advocate for sustainable agriculture, Professor Swaminathan’s legacy continues to inspire individuals worldwide. Among those inspired is Sadaf Afreen Mondal, an alumna of Catalyst Learning Services.
Sadaf’s journey from Catalyst to the corridors of the JRD Tata Ecotechnology Department at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) is a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship. She pursued her Masters in Natural Resources and Governance at TISS Hyderabad after extensive preparation at Catalyst. Today, she finds herself at the heart of meaningful research and impactful work.
“My journey at MSSRF started in the JRD Ecotechnology department. In the first half of my internship, I focused on understanding the role of FPOs in pulse cultivation and the study resonated with his ( M.S. Swaminathan) views that flaws are in the economics of agriculture, along with the study of NELD (non-economic loss and damage) caused by climate change. Now that I got the chance to join the Climate Change department under Prof. T . Jayaraman, to say the least, it’s quite humbling to be around people of such stature. My gratitude towards the department for helping build my understanding of the importance of equity in the context of the global carbon budget and long-term mitigation in such a short span is ineffable. Alas! It is the end of an era and simply doleful that I missed my opportunity to meet him.”
