Bharati Bhawan Publishers & Distributors hosted a workshop on “Strengthening Social Science Teaching – Connecting Classrooms with Rewarding Careers” in Kolkata. The workshop aimed to empower social science school teachers to enhance their teaching techniques, connect social science with real-life relevance, and make Bharati Bhawan textbooks more engaging for students.
Bharati Bhawan was established in 1943 by Ram Mohan Bose, who wanted to publish high-quality books at affordable prices. Starting from Patna, Bharati Bhawan gradually spread across India, and now has offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru (Bangalore) and Noida. Bharati Bhawan publishes school and college textbooks in English, Hindi and Bengali. It publishes books for state school boards and for the national boards – CBSE and ICSE.
The workshop was facilitated by social sector – climate action career coach Sauraveswar Sen, a leading educator and social entrepreneur with over 12 years of experience in training students and professionals for careers in the social development sector. He is the Founder-Mentor of Catalyst, a Visiting Faculty at prestigious institutions like TISS, University of Calcutta, and St. Xavier’s College Mumbai.
A core highlight of the workshop was connecting social science school curriculum of Environment Studies, Civics, Geography, History, Economics et al with social sector professional opportunities in Climate Innovation & Mitigation, LGBTIQA+& Gender Advocacy, ESG, CSR, Disaster Management, Mental Healthcare, Public Health, Social Work, Public Policy, Social Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Rural Development. Career trajectory and growth prospects of social science graduates working in the social sector was elaborately discussed in the session.
57 social science teachers from Class 1 to 10 representing schools in Kolkata and Howrah participated in the workshop.
“As a teacher of History, I can now understand how to sensitise the students about various career options that social sciences can open”, remarked Rupanjali Majumdar from The Heritage School, Kolkata.
“The interaction has equipped me with information that will create awareness, motivation and interest in students about social science”, cited Dalbir Singh from St. Denis School, Howrah.
Sauraveswar Sen, facilitator of the workshop said “Strengthening social science teaching at schools will be a catalyst to leveraging multi-disciplinary approach envisioned by National Education Policy 2020 and inspire young minds to embark on career pathways that will pave the way towards people – centred, ecologically sustainable, just society”
The workshop has been conducted at Rourkela, Muzaffarpur, Bengaluru, Dhanbad, Nalanda and Jamshedpur prior to Kolkata and witnessed 500+ social science school teachers from Class 1 to Class 10 participating.
